TALK: "The Divine Liturgy" (in ENGLISH)

Speaker: Mr Basilios Psilacos is Associate Lecturer in Worship and Liturgy, and Instructor in Byzantine Ecclesiastical Music at St Andrew's Theological College.
After completing his Bachelor of Theology at St Andrew's in 1993, Basilios Psilacos continued his studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), from 1995-2000, where he received his Masters of Theology (Hons). The topic of his master’s dissertation was: “Τό Ασματικό Τυπικό στη μουσική χειρόγραφη παράδοση” (The Asmatic Ordo in the musical manuscript tradition), under the supervision of the late Liturgics Professor Ioannis Foundoulis. Whilst in Thessaloniki, he also successfully completed a Bachelor of Byzantine Music at the School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, and a Graduate Diploma of Byzantine Music at the Musical Conservatorium AMO ‘The Galaxy’.
His interest in the art of Byzantine Music began from an early age. His first Byzantine Music Teacher was Archon Protopsaltis Mr Ilias Fraggoulis (Adelaide). Whilst undertaking his undergraduate studies in Sydney, he was further immersed in the art of Byzantine music by the late Archon Protopsaltis Mr Antonios Aristodemou (+2000). In Thessaloniki, his teacher was the late Archon Music Teacher and Protopsaltis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Mr Demetrios Sourlantzis (+2006). While in Thessaloniki, he also took part in various Byzantine music choirs (Ioannis Damaskinos, Ioannis Koukouzelis, Aristotle University Byzantine Choir), and chanted for the liturgical services at the Holy Monastery of Vlatathon with the Professor of Byzantine music Mr Antonios Alygizakis. Basilios Psilacos started teaching Byzantine music in 2001, after his return to Australia. He is now the Protopsaltis at the Parish of the Resurrection of our Lord, Kogarah, Sydney.
With a keen interest also in the health sciences, he successfully completed the requirements of the Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Macquarie University, Sydney, graduating in 2010.

TALK: "St John Climacus and the Stages of the Spiritual Life" (in ENGLISH)

Speaker: Dr Philip Kariatlis is Sub-Dean and Associate Professor of Theology at St Andrew's. After taking an undergraduate degree in Theology from St Andrew's, he graduated from the University of Sydney with a degree in Arts, majoring in Modern Greek. He received a Master of Theology and a doctorate from the Sydney College of Divinity, where he studied under Professor Gerard Kelly. His doctorate was in the area of ecclesiology where he examined the notion of koinonia as both gift and goal. His research interest lies in Church doctrine, specifically its existential and salvific character. He translated the doctoral dissertation of Archbishop Stylianos (Harkianakis) 'The Infallibility of the Church in Orthodox Theology' (2008) and has written in several peer reviewed journals within Australia and abroad. He has also written extensively for various publications, along with creative works. His most recent book is entitled: Church as Communion: Gift and Goal of Koinonia (2011).

TALK: "The Mystery of the Cross" (in ENGLISH)

Speaker: Dr Andrew Mellas is Senior Lecturer in Byzantine History & Liturgical Studies at St Andrew's Theological College. In 2018, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney on the emotion of compunction in Byzantium. Andrew has published various books, chapters and articles on the history of Byzantium, liturgics and hymnody, as well as presenting papers on these subjects at international conferences. His current projects include exploring the liturgical intersections of hagiography and hymnography, and editing The Cambridge Companion to the Byzantine Church. He is also a member of the Australian Byzantine Choir.

TALK: "The Exile of Humanity and Journey of Return" (in ENGLISH)

Speaker: DR LYDIA GORE-JONES is Lecturer in Biblical Studies at St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney. Her doctoral thesis completed at Macquarie University dealt with two Jewish apocalyptic works as response to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple by the Romans in AD 70. She has taught subjects related to biblical history and Hebrew language at tertiary level. She had previously worked as radio journalist, translator, and teacher of English as a Second Language.
