TALK: "Hope After Tragedy" (in English)
7:30pm - 9:00pm St Eustathios Church, 221 Dorcas St, South Melbourne
Speaker: Mr Michael Zervos, currently General Manager of the Allanah and Madeline Foundation, a national charity protecting children from violence and its devastating impact. The Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996.
Michael has been with the Alannah and Madeline Foundation since February 2006. In this time the charity has grown into a national organisation employing close to fifty staff and hundreds of volunteers. He has worked in senior roles with a number of organisations including Melbourne Water, CPA Australia, Orica, Cadbury and Repco.
Before The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, Michael was responsible for the Finance, Information Systems, Human Resources and Administration functions with the National children’s charity Make-A-Wish Foundation. Michael contributed to Make-A-Wish’s complete reorganisation resulting in a doubling in revenue to over $12million.
Being a dad, Michael was drawn to the children’s charity sector philosophy and mission of supporting children.
The topic of "Hope After Tragedy" resonates with Michael given his charity work. He will discuss the good that can result from seemingly hopeless situations.

In the fourth century AD, the rapid Christianisation of the Roman empire had a surprising corollary; the influx of Christians, men and women of various status and walks of life, into the Egyptian desert. These saints are known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and this presentation will assess their immediate historical context, aspects of their lives, and their sayings (apophthegmata), in order to ascertain their relevance for each and every one of us embarking on the Lenten journey in the Church.
