TALK: "Orthodoxy in the Modern World" in ENGLISH 7:30pm - 9:00pm St Eustathios Church, 221 Dorcas St, South Melbourne Speaker: Fr Arsenije Jovanovic, Serbian Orthodox monk from the Holy Monastery of Ostrog in Montenegro currently visiting Australia.
Monk Arsenije (Arsenios) - author, musician, artist - born Aleksandar Jovanovic (Yovanovich) in Communist Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
His early life's motto was: sex, drugs & rock'n'roll - live fast, die young, be a good-looking corpse. He graduated in dentistry in Belgrade, lived in the city's thriving rock scene before moving to New York City where he spent 7 years. He came to the realisation that taking drugs, playing the guitar and living in your own world is only one step away from suicide.
Eventually taking up monastic vows, he spent time on Mount Athos, at the Monastery Ostrog, 12 years in the Monastery Visoki Dechani (High Dechani), in the Monastery Tsrna Reka (Black River) - 5 years of which he lived in isolation and then, following some health problems, settled in the Monastery of Ostrog.
Since his book launch "God & Rock 'n' Roll" he has been seen as a vital link between today's youth and the Orthodox Church. His talks began on Radio Svetigora, the radio station of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Diocese of Montenegro, and quickly spread around Serbia and the diaspora. He has recently also given lectures in various European cities including London, Belgrade & Stockholm. Here is a link to hear one of his programmes: http://www.svetigora.com/node/13535
